John Snow Cholera Heat Map & COVID Heat Map
In this assignment, we learned historical data and how geography played an important part in the findings of Cholera with John Snow. We had data recording the area, water sources, and housings confirmed with the disease. We then took those findings and features digitally to concentrate the data area to show where the disease was most prevalent through a heat map. We were able to see the layer of information gathered onto the map. We then applied the same layering skills provided by multiple sources onto a heat map of the United States in which we were able to see where confirmed cases of Covid-19 were concentrated.
From the heat map, we can tell that confirmed COVID cases are mostly concentrated in the east part of the United States and then a little southwest. These are where major concentrated cities are, it could be because of that typically in cities with population, hygiene, space and general living in the cities could be a factor.
It was interesting to see how we could apply geographical information to real-life situations and even apply the same skills to a current situation such as Covid-19. These skills can be helpful in determining causes as well as influencing decisions to help prevent the spread of disease in the area. By studying and informing the area we can learn more, not just for diseases but to help us. We are able to do this a little bit easier than John Snow as we have more resources to study the land in a timely and efficient manner but the concept itself is something we should take away as the land is an insight into our living.
