GIS Layers

After familiarizing myself with the tabs necessary to add or remove layers in map, I was able to learn about the resolution, accuracy and scale of display within a map, that is provided when you click on the map. With the elevation layer we were able to observe data in which we describe the elevation that can seen globally.

On the world map we are able to sleep mountains and areas below according to the color in relation to depth. We can also observe grassy areas and water areas as well with the same concept of lighter to dark representing depth as darker being higher in elevation

We then were able to examine the world countries cities and river layers in which consisted of:

Layer -Vector (Attributes)

1. World Countries- polygon (shows specific countries and some information about the country)

2. World Cities- point (shows area and information of the area)

3. World Rivers- line (shows rivers' miles and system)

It's interesting the details with the information provided by the map as they give you insight on the geographical nature of each place such as how long the rivers were from and what system they were a part of which again is useful. We can determine that knowledge to our advantage such as whether that resource can be valuable for another purpose like we mentioned in the other assignment with contamination, we know river systems are connected so if one is affected we know the other rivers in the same system might also be.

We then look at the longitude and latitude to determine specific areas such as the cities in the assignment

-100.3363, 44.3680 Pierre

37.6173, 55.7558 Moscow

31.2357, 30.0444 Alexandria

-77.0328. 38.8903 Liezen

I learned that Geocoding is the process of turning an address into a locational point in the map. Which makes it easier for me to locate and access for multiple purposes. I had the opportunity to take what I learned to make a map of my own where I could see my version of resources and data that I have now known to easily make in the system with various features and utilize it. The result are below:

Image Details

Location: Provider - Resolution -Accuracy

Oahu, Hawaii: Earthstar Geographics - 15m - 12m

Shanghai, China: Maxar Vivid Imagery - 0.60m - 5m

Oslo, Norway: Earthstar Geographics - 15m - 12m

Abu Dhabi, UAE: Earthstar Geographics - 15m - 12m

Washington, DC: Earthstar Geographics - 15m - 12m

What objects can be seen at the following resolutions?

Low resolution 15 meters- general landmarks and topography like highways but nothing specific

High resolution 60 cm - we start to see bigger buildings, stadiums, airports, and other areas

High Resolution 30 cm- we can see houses, streams, and individual buildings in a certain place like the airport.
