Assignment #2
The Eagle Map of the United States was created by the mapmaker Joseph Churchman after seeing a figure of a bird on the map from light and shadow. He was going to disregard the image but used the idea to help visualize states united in their borders for the younger generation. He wanted to bring about this culture of visual learning by layering the image on the map to aid in memorization and a sense of unity, especially in a time when that was not the case. What captivated me to this map was the image of the bird over a historical map and it was recognized in education, not something you see often in history books. When I read the title specifying the bird as an eagle, I was more interested in the map as the eagle is the bird of the United States. The map displays the United States in the 1820s-1830s.

This is a very cool map. I haven't seen it before and will add it to my lectures for next year. Great find!
